■Origin of Felt The oldest existing felt in Japan is the wool felt housed in the Shosoin, which is believed to have been brought from Silla during the Nara period. After the early modern period, it began to be called "wool felt," and large quantities of wool felt were imported not only from China but also from Europe. By the late Edo period, it started to be used in the daily lives of the wealthy class. Even today, red wool felt is used as a Japanese-style carpet in tea ceremony settings known as "navy wool felt" and in the corridors of temples.
